A seamless evolution of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual range, the Date – according to Rolex themselves – is the modern incarnation of one of the most recognizable watches in watch-making history.

 

Like the seminal Air-King, the Rolex Date is built into a 34mm steel case, with an oyster flat three-piece bracelet. It’s a perpetual movement, self-winding and fully mechanical. The face is a subtle shade of pink, and differs from the Air-King with the addition of a date indicator. Others are available with blue or white faces. The crystal is scratch resistant, and the date is magnified by a 2.5x ‘Cyclops’ lens. Rolex say it’s waterproof to 100 metres, but we dare say that’s a boast that the average owner rarely tests.

 

Other editions of the Date watch are available, notably one with a black dial and gold batons; and another where the pink face is replaced in silver. Others have a two-tone bracelet and bezel with a white face, testament to how Rolex will vary the standard model to appeal to premium watch buyers.

 

However, all retain their value, with good examples priced slightly higher than the Air-King.

 

The Rolex Date is an ideal watch for the collector with a slightly larger budget wanting something more complex than the basic Air-King. While it is still undeniably Rolex, the Date is certainly not showy, and appeals to owners for its subtlety and grace. As an investment, it’s second to none.
