About

The Rolex Explorer is something special, and was inspired by one of mankind’s most remarkable achievements.

In 1953, Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay became the first two men to set foot on the summit of Mount Everest. In recognition of this feat, and to mark Rolex’s decades of experience of working in extreme conditions in the Himalayas, they introduced the Explorer watch, as the ultimate expedition and mountaineering watch.

These days, the summit of Everest has been reduced to what experienced mountaineers dismissively see as a tourist trail for people with enough money to be dragged up the 29,000 feet to the roof of the world. However, in those sixty years, Rolex hasn’t compromised on the Explorer brand, and it is still as an astonishing sports watch as it ever was.

The Rolex 1016 Explorer has been described by GQ magazine as a superb entry-level Rolex, and less-than-perfect example are eminently affordable to even the most spend-thrift collector. GQ’s advice is to hold out for a good example, have it regularly cleaned and serviced, and you’ll have a piece that holds its value in the long term. In an unpredictable market, fine watches from the Explorer range can be found for comparatively little money, and that’s one of the reasons there is such an interest in the relatively cheap Explorer range.

The Rolex Explorer, while not commanding the highest of prices in the Rolex range, still commands fine sums for those who want the name on their wrist to match their uncompromising lifestyle. If you’re looking to buy an Explorer, contact Mercia Watches and we’ll help you find your dream watch.
