A relatively new addition to the legendary Rolex range of wristwatches, the Oyster Perpetual Datejust II was released in 2009, with “the charisma and majesty of a classic revisited,” according to the makers.

 

Rolex go on to tell us that the Datejust II “carries on the tradition and codes of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust”, presenting “all the advantages of the Datejust in a more majestic format, along with technical innovations”.

 

What this means is the new watch addresses the demands of modern fashion with a case that is 41mm instead of the earlier model’s 36mm. Inside the case is a completely updated movement that is still perpetual, self-winding and completely mechanical. Like all watches in the Rolex Oyster collection, the crystal is scratch-resistant sapphire, with a 2.5x Cyclops magnifier.

 

Still relatively new, there are not as many variants of the Datejust II as there are other Oyster models. The dial comes in black, blue or silver, while the bezel can be either fluted or smooth. It’s only available in silver or silver and gold.

 

It has been described as one of the more understated members of the Rolex family, and therefore appeals to buyers who want to own the world’s number one watch brand without shouting from the rooftops. One reviewer calls it “an amazing combination of real history, versatile style, and quality watch-making that should get everyone from the casual watch wearer to the die-hard enthusiast excited”.

 

It’s still too early to tell how the Datejust II will fare on the second hand market, but indications show that – like all Rolex watches – it holds its value well and will be an excellent investment for the future.
